The9 Limited was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in December 1999 (originally as GameNow.net) and later rebranded; it is a Shanghai‑based internet company with a long history in online gaming and related services.

Since February 2021 The9 pivoted to global blockchain operations and is primarily engaged in cryptocurrency mining—notably Bitcoin—operating mining assets across China, Eastern Europe, Asia and North America and reporting bitcoin holdings and mining revenue in its public filings.
