The cheapest spot bitcoin ETF in the US right now is the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) at a 0.15% management fee, followed by Franklin's EZBC at 0.19%. If size and trading depth matter more than a few basis points, BlackRock's IBIT is the giant at $67.3 billion in net assets, and GBTC still has the longest record of any fund here, dating back to 2013.
All ten funds below hold actual bitcoin. What separates them is the fee, the size of the fund and the brokerage you already use.
Key takeaways
- Lowest fee: Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) at 0.15%, per Grayscale's fund page on Oct 7, 2026.
- Biggest fund: iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) with $67.3 billion in net assets as of Oct 7, 2026, at a 0.25% sponsor fee.
- Most expensive: Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) at 1.50%, ten times the fee of its smaller sibling.
- Six of the ten charge between 0.19% and 0.25%. On a $10,000 position that gap is $6 a year.
- None of the fund pages we checked showed an active fee waiver this quarter.
What is the best bitcoin ETF in Q4 2026?
It depends on what you're optimizing for. A long-term holder who never trades is mostly paying the fee, so BTC and EZBC lead. Someone who trades often or uses options cares about size and liquidity, which is IBIT's lane.
Here are our picks by use case. Every fee and asset figure comes from the issuer's own fund page, checked Oct 8, 2026.
Best for low fees: Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC)
BTC charges a 0.15% management fee, the lowest of the ten funds we compared. It launched July 31, 2024 and reports $5.26 billion in assets under management as of Oct 7, 2026. Coinbase Custody holds the bitcoin.
Pros:
- Lowest fee in the group at 0.15%
- Already a multi-billion dollar fund, so it's not a tiny product
- Ticker is literally BTC, which is hard to forget
Cons:
- Newer than the January 2024 launches
- Easy to confuse with the much pricier GBTC
Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC)
Best runner-up on fees: Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC)
EZBC lists a 0.19% gross and net sponsor fee, so there's no waiver doing the work. Franklin reports $467.13 million in total net assets as of Oct 7, 2026.
Pros:
- Second-lowest fee here
- Fee is the same before and after waivers, so no cliff later
Cons:
- One of the smaller funds by assets
- Franklin's page doesn't show daily trading volume, so liquidity is harder to judge
Best for size and liquidity: iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT)
IBIT is the heavyweight. BlackRock lists $67.3 billion in net assets as of Oct 7, 2026, more than six times GBTC's $10.56 billion, the next-largest total we could confirm on an issuer page. It traded 30.4 million shares on Oct 6. The sponsor fee is 0.25%.
Pros:
- Largest fund we could verify, by a wide margin
- Deep trading volume and an active options market (we wrote about IBIT and FBTC options here)
- The fund most people mean when they say bitcoin ETF
Cons:
- 0.25% costs more than BTC, EZBC, BITB or HODL
- Size doesn't lower your fee
Best for an IRA at Fidelity: Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC)
Fidelity says it charges an expense ratio of 25 basis points (0.25%) on FBTC and that you can hold it in brokerage, trust and IRA accounts. If your retirement money already sits at Fidelity, this is the least friction. Fidelity's public page didn't state a net asset figure we could cite, so we left that out.
Pros:
- Simple to add inside an existing Fidelity IRA
- Same fee as IBIT
Cons:
- 0.25% is mid-pack, not cheap
- Fund data on Fidelity's site is harder to pull up than other issuers'

Longest track record: Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC)
GBTC's fund inception date is Sept 25, 2013, and it converted to an ETF listing on Jan 11, 2024. It still reports $10.56 billion in assets under management as of Oct 7, 2026. The catch is the 1.50% management fee.
Pros:
- Longest history of any bitcoin fund here
- Still one of the largest by assets
Cons:
- 1.50% fee is ten times BTC's
- Same bitcoin exposure as funds that cost a fraction as much
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC)
Solid low-cost options: Bitwise (BITB), VanEck (HODL) and ARK 21Shares (ARKB)
BITB and HODL both charge 0.20%. Bitwise reports $3.13 billion in net assets (Oct 5, 2026) and publishes daily proof of reserves. VanEck lists $1.22 billion in total net assets (Oct 7, 2026). ARKB's management fee is 0.21%, with $2.69 billion in AUM as of Oct 7, 2026.
BITB's page still shows its launch waiver, but that covered only the first six months after listing in January 2024, so the 0.20% fee is what applies now.
The 0.25% group: CoinShares (BRRR) and Invesco Galaxy (BTCO)
BRRR charges a 0.25% sponsor fee with $487.8 million in AUM (Oct 6, 2026) and splits custody between Coinbase and BitGo. BTCO lists a 0.25% total expense ratio and $432.45 million in market value (Oct 6, 2026). Both are fine products, they just don't win on price or size.

Does a 0.10% fee difference actually matter?
Less than people think on small balances, more than people think over time. On $10,000, the gap between 0.15% and 0.25% is $10 a year. On $500,000 held for a decade, it's real money.
The bigger trap is GBTC. At 1.50%, the same $10,000 costs $150 a year versus $15 in BTC.
How we picked
We started with the ten US spot bitcoin ETFs on 21rates.com and checked every fee on the issuer's own fund page on Oct 8, 2026. We only list net assets where the issuer's page states a number with a date. Picks are grouped by use case, not by a single score, because a trader and a long-term holder want different things.
Our earlier side-by-side ETF comparison covers performance in more depth. Leveraged products are a different animal; see our note on the SEC approving 3x bitcoin ETFs.
FAQ
What is the cheapest bitcoin ETF?
Among the ten US spot funds we compared, the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) has the lowest fee at 0.15%. Franklin's EZBC is next at 0.19%.
Which bitcoin ETF is the biggest?
IBIT from BlackRock, with $67.3 billion in net assets as of Oct 7, 2026 per BlackRock's own fund page.
Why is GBTC so expensive?
GBTC traded as a trust for years before it became an ETF in January 2024, and its 1.50% fee stayed well above the newer funds. Grayscale's own Mini Trust (BTC) charges 0.15% for the same exposure.
Can I hold a bitcoin ETF in an IRA?
Yes, at most brokerages. Fidelity says FBTC works in brokerage, trust and IRA accounts. If you want actual bitcoin in an IRA instead of a fund, see our IRA comparison.
Do bitcoin ETFs hold real bitcoin?
The spot funds here do. Each holds bitcoin with a custodian such as Coinbase Custody, Anchorage Digital or BitGo, and the fund's price tracks a bitcoin reference rate.
