Bitkey is a self‑custody Bitcoin wallet that combines a mobile app, a dedicated hardware device, and built‑in recovery tools to help users own and manage their private keys; it was developed by Block, Inc. and launched in 2023 (began shipping March 2024). Built by Block’s Proto team, Bitkey uses a 2‑of‑3 multisignature design, biometric hardware, and inheritance/recovery features to enable practical, secure self‑custody without relying on traditional seed phrases. The product was created inside Block, Inc. (co‑founded by Jack Dorsey) and was led in development by Proto team lead Thomas Templeton.
